Georgian Style Dwelling
Traditional Georgian new build property
New Build Replacement Family Home
Scheme
6-bedroom family home with basement (approx 650 Sq. Metres)
Location
Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire
The brief sought the demolition of an existing property in Berkhamsted with a new replacement six bedroom dwelling, including a new detached double garage and associated landscaping works.
The new dwelling was repositioned more centrally within the site providing an improved balance of amenity to both the front and rear. The scope was to deliver a new home with Georgian architectural qualities with a subservient contemporary extension to the rear.
The existing three storey dwelling included loft accommodation and so the new scheme sought to maintain a similar building height but with an additional basement level comprising a gymnasium, plant room, sauna and cinema room.
The principles at ground floor sought to provide a grand entrance vestibule, lift and hidden storage with a glazed view from the hallway leading outwards to the rear garden.
The Front elevation followed a regular form with hipped roof, repetition and symmetrical window fenestration and a central portico.
The form had been designed with the main house and two side single storey flat roofed elements to reduce the scale at the sides. The floor to ceiling heights were also tiered in hierarchy, with the ground floor taller than the upper floors. This was reflected by deeper window fenestrations at ground level. The overall aesthetic of brick arch window headers, brick and stone detailing helped to emphasise these scale and proportions.
