House in Tring- Two Storey Extension & New-Build Facility
Tring
Wheelchair accessible family home
Scheme
5-bedroom family home + Facility Building
Location
Hertfordshire
This existing Rothschild period family home required conversion and adaptation to become wheelchair friendly whilst increasing habitable accommodation to meet the clients needs. Planning permission was granted for a two storey side extension to the existing house and a separate single storey new-build facility building within the curtilage of the grounds.
The main house extension had to respect the AONB location and greenbelt planning policies in terms of materials, amenity provision, scale and character whilst being converted for wheelchair use where space standards and manoeuvrability were fundamental. The scheme has transformed the existing house into a five bedroom property including an extended kitchen, utility and master suite with accessible lift provision.
The separate new facility building will provide a gymnasium, pool, shower room and kitchenette facilities and has been designed as a black boarded barn style building with internal vaulted ceilings.
Landscaping became another important element of the scheme, whereby level threshold limestone paving enabling access around both buildings with anti-slip properties were key client requirements.
The project was tendered in November 2023 and construction began on site in January 2024 with a 10 month build programme. Pinchin Architects also administered the JCT Contract and continued to assist with the design and constraints that the scheme presented.
