A site with underused land and garages at Romney Close will be home to three new flats, providing much-needed housing in the area. The site held a mix of garages, overgrown ground, and possibly one of Haringey’s largest trees. The garages on the site largely provide a storage function, as many of the garages are either dilapidated or are not used for parking cars. Informal parking tends to occur in an ad-hoc manner around the site, and boundaries are not well defined.
Working closely with the Borough of Haringey, Pinchin Architects have developed a scheme that is sited sensitively to its immediate surrounding. The proposal aims to develop the underused parcel of land to provide a new defined usage, and to create an improved outlook for the existing adjacent and surrounding residents.
Three 2-bedroom flats are proposed over three storeys and will each be suitable for housing four people. All the flats are dual aspect and have an east to west orientation to utilise the morning and evening sun. A shared amenity area is proposed to the rear of the properties to improve the outlook, as well as a renovation of the ad-hoc parking area.
The siting of the scheme has been designed carefully so that it respects the site’s large mature tree root protection zone, as well as the existing block of flats at Romney Close. In conjunction with Haringey, Pinchin Architects and their contractors have produced a high-quality end result and fundamentally good homes at affordable rents for local people.
