Self Sufficient Contemporary Farmstead, Wheatfields

< Back

Pinchin Architects are a London based Architecture firm, working predominantly in Hertfordshire and the Home Counties, our team live in the surrounding areas so our knowledge and understanding of local materials is second to none.

We’ve worked on a number of Hertfordshire based projects that have involved the use of sustainable and local materials, a prime example of our passion for energy efficient and sustainably built houses is our concept house - Wheatfields

This project was an internal exercise for our design team to envision a fully self sufficient property in the county of Hertfordshire.

This property is built from the earth and clay on which it sits and has thick rammed earth walls for maximum insulation. Another feature of the property that the team envisioned was that rainwater would be collected, filtered and irrigated to the green walls which can be found throughout the property. We also designed an on-site microbrewery that produces ‘wheat’ beer with the filtered rainwater, it was crucial to us that we ensured the design and materials used would have no negative impact on the properties lush surroundings.

At Pinchin Architects we’re dedicated to designing net zero-carbon properties, these properties would be responsible for emitting zero greenhouse gases. It’s important to note that both building and running a home emits carbon, so the materials used throughout the design and construction process must be consciously selected. We proudly work with Housing Associations and private clients to develop carbon neutral properties by sourcing local materials, hiring local tradesmen.

We would be delighted to talk further with you about any aspects of your building project and how we can work together to achieve a more naturally conscious and low-zero carbon outcome. Through collaboration, learning and an applied determination, we can change our local and global environments for the better.
